History on Alfa Romeo
Alfa Romeo is an Italian Manufacturer of cars. They were first founded on June 24th 1910 in Milan. The company has been producing cars for the racing industry since 1911 and has a main reputation for building top specification expensive sports cars.
The Founders of Alfa Romeo first called the business ALFA. Alexandre Darracq who was French, Ugo Stella who was Italian and Nicola Romeo who was also Italian were the main people behind the business. The business was took over by the Italian state holding company Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale between 1932 and 1986. In 1986 Istituto per la Ricostruzione Industriale became part of the Fiat Group and then from 2007 the business has been part of the Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A.
In 1928 Nicola Romeo left the business, with Alfa going broke and into administration after the defence ended their contracts with the car giants. Going into the end of 1932, Alfa Romeo was taken over by Benito Mussolini’s Government which then have effective control of the business. The factory struggled to make any profit after the second world war. They then turned into a business that wanted to produce mass products to make the most money in the shortest amount of time by concentrating on making smaller cars. One of Alfa Romeo’s classics was the Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine which remained in production until 1995.
Alfa Romeo was still owned by the government, thus allowing the governments parent company “ Finmeccanica” to produce some sporty cars, but again the cars were not making enough profit for the Italian’s. The Marque was the sold to the Fiat Group in 1986.
In the early 2000s the Alfa Romeo brand were producing 206,836 cars and commercial vehicles, jumping up 6802 cars to 213,638 in 2001. 2002 to 2005 saw the manufactures produce less cars than previous years.
Alfa Romeo has introduced some technological innovations over the years, the company has also often been among the first users of new technologies. Alfa Romeo's trademark double overhead cam engine was used for the first time in the 1914 Grand Prix car, the first road car with such an engine the 6C 1500 Sport appeared in the 1928.
Alfa Romeo tested one of the very first electric injection systems the Caproni-Fuscaldo in the Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 with "Ala spessa" body in 1940 Mille Miglia. The engine had six electrically operated injectors which were fed by a semi-high pressure circulating fuel pump system.
Alfa Romeo has produced not just cars but trucks, trolleybuses, buses and Aeroplane engines.
