History on Daimler

The Daimler Motor Company Limited was founded in 1896 by H J Lawson in London England. The name Daimler had been purchased from Gottlieb Daimler and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft of Cannstatt, Germany.  The German version based in Constatt, Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft continued its production of cars until 1908 where it changed its name to Mercedes in order to avoid confusion with the English Daimler Motor Company Limited.

The first Birtish made Daimler was the 3½hp Panhard & Levassor . Daimler became the official transporter of the Royal Family in 1898. In 1908 Daimler received two more Royal Warrants one from the Court of Prussia and then the Court of Spain. By 1914 Royalty from Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Indian Princes, Japan, Korea, Manchuria, Russia, Spain and Sweden were all using Daimlers.

Every British monarch from Edward VII to the current Queen has been driven in Daimler limousines. After a Daimler transmission failure on the Kings Car in 1950 Rolls-Royce became the official transporter of the Royal Family with Daimler currently providing unofficial chauffer transport.

In 1960 Daimler was purchased by Jaguar, the two makes were merged into one near enough with Daimler retaining its name for only the very top of the line cars. In 1989 Jaguar and Daimler with it were bought by Ford. In 2008 Jaguar and Daimler were finally purchased by Tata.
